Combine Demo Rules

WRIGHT COUNTY FAIR 2024 COMBINE DEMO DERBY RULES:

Drivers and pit crew must be 16 years or older. Anyone under 18 MUST provide a signed waiver from parent or guardian.

One driver and 2 pit crew allowed per combine. Everyone must sign a liability waiver and receive a pit pass. No one is allowed in the pit without a pass. PIT opens at 2 pm. No extra pit passes sold.

Drivers and pit crew are expected to attend pit meeting when called.

Combines will be inspected by Derby officials. Any infractions of the rules must be fixed before machine will be cleared to compete. Official’s decision is final. After passing inspection driver will be given a colored stick. This must be mounted near driver area so it can be broken off after driver is unable to continue or is disqualified.


A sign must be mounted on the roof of the combine with a number clearly shown on both sides.

Seatbelt and D.O.T. approved helmet are required to be worn during competition. A fire extinguisher must also be on board the combine.

The derby will consist of heats with comparable sized combines (when possible). The feature heat will place the heat winners together no matter what size of machine.

NO alcoholic beverages or intoxication allowed in the pit before, during, or after the derby. Subject to disqualification, forfeit of prize money.

Any flagrant violation by driver and pit crew, reckless driving, foul language, or action toward official or fan will result in disqualification and forfeit of prize money.

Combines may be decorated, painted, or offer advertising but must be in good taste. No profanity or obscene materials will be allowed. A trophy will be presented to the “BEST DECORATED COMBINE”.

ALL ELIGIBLE PAYOUTS WILL BE MADE AND HANDED OUT AFTER THE DERBY. THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE BY THE ANNOUNCERS STAND. Drivers will be required to fill out a Federal 1099 form for winnings of $600 or more before receiving their payment. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER WILL BE REQUIRED.


COMPETITION RULES:

WHEN YOUR HEAT IS CALLED YOU WILL HAVE 5 MINUTES TO BE ON THE TRACK. COMBINES WILL BE LINED UP BY DERBY OFFICIALS.

No HITTING OF FRONT DRIVE TIRES allowed for the first 5 minutes of the heat. IF intentional contact occurs, driver will be disqualified (Official’s decision is final). After 5 minutes drivers will be notified when hitting of front tires is ALLOWED.

NO TEAM DRIVING. ALL COMBINES MUST MAKE CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER. YOU WILL RECEIVE ONE WARNING BEFORE BEING DISQUALIFIED.

No pushing or pulling a combine out of bounds. You will be given one warning before being disqualified. Keep Combines away from fence on Grandstand side of track.

Combine must stop immediately if contact with another machine caused the other combine to rise off the ground. This rule is to prevent combine roll overs.

Two or more combines locked together must attempt to separate within 2 minutes or be disqualified.

A 2 minute time limit given to restart combine and make contact with another machine. Official’s decision is final.

Any combine deemed to be spraying oil may be disqualified by judges.

ONE FIRE and combine is disqualified.

IF YOU LOSE YOUR HEADER YOU ARE DISQUALIFIED. NO COMBINE RUNS WITHOUT HEADER ATTACHED IN HEAT OR FEATURE.

Green Flag means start. Red flag means stop competition (Air Horn will also sound and all machines must stop). Failure to do so could lead to disqualification. Black Flag means disqualified. Judges decision is final. Checkered Flag means heat is over and winner decided.

**TROPHY WILL BE GIVEN ON TRACK AFTER FEATURE IS COMPLETE.

INSPECTION/BUILDING RULES:

Any alterations to stock exhaust must have exhaust directed upward. Any turbo-charged combine must have upward directed exhaust.

Batteries must be secured on top of the combine away from the operator and must be covered.

Fuel tank must be mounted inside the grain tank, with original tank removed, and be sufficiently vented.

All exterior fans must be shielded.

Radiators may be moved or removed and must contain water only.

Tires must contain AIR only. No fluid or foam in tires. No double walled tires allowed. No duals allowed.

All combines must have cabs and only TWO wheel drive units will be allowed. Mudhog/Rear assist axles can be used BUT must have drive systems DISABLED.

All combines must use a grain table platform or a row crop head with heads fixed at 18” - 24” from the ground. Maximum platform length is 20’. Minimum platform length must be as long as the outside of the drive tires.

Combine grain table must have reel, guards, sickles, and all other sheet metal removed. All combine row heads must have the row units removed.

Combine heads from prior events may be reinforced to original strength or less. Excessive reinforcement will not be allowed.

Combine ladder, unloading auger, choppers, and all glass must be removed. Separator must be inoperable. Driver’s door can be welded or chained shut. Safety bars must be added to the front and side of cab area for driver protection.

One brace per side from machine to header in front of the front drive wheels. One 1” angle iron is allowed on the steering arm. Braces are allowed to keep the header height at 18” - 24”. No braces are allowed around the front or rear wheels or rear axle parts.

Reinforcing is allowed. Excessive reinforcements will be disqualified by officials. Reinforcing is limited to 10 pieces of iron any length located on the combine except in areas not allowed in rules. This can be any type of iron, angle, channel flat or round. NO EXTRA welding on the cutter bar edge, NO welding rock guards or header bottom. NO well casing of any kind. The variable speed drive and radiator may be protected.

NO CONCRETE IS ALLOWED ANYWHERE.

If a combine suffers rear axle or tie rod breakage during the event it may be repaired if eligible for feature. If rear tires are deemed unusable, ski or skid will be allowed on rear axle to return to feature.

WELDERS allowed in pit with proper fire extinguisher available nearby.

IRON SPEARS OR EXTERNAL IRON USED FOR AGGRESSIVE ACTION ARE NOT ALLOWED.

JUDGES DECISION IS FINAL.

PRIZE MONEY PAYOUTS:

Best Decorated: Trophy and $50.00

Heat stops when 2 combines are left running. Amount could change depending on combine entries. Each receives $100 and advances to feature. Non-heat winners receive $50.00.

POWER WHEELS DEMO DERBY RULES:

Pre-registration required by July 19th. Ages 3-10 years old are allowed to participate.

Pit opens at 2:00 p.m.

Driver (rider) and parents/guardian allowed in pit. Other family members and friends must purchase grandstand tickets. Reserved seating $12.00.

Be on grounds and in pit by 5:15 p.m. You will be directed to the Power Wheels area. A signed waiver for child is required. Parents/guardian will sign a waiver when entering pit area.

There will be a pit meeting at approximately 6:15 that the driver and parent/guardian must attend.

Power wheels will run first. Parent/guardian must bring power wheels and driver onto track when called.

A fair official will assist drivers on the track during the derby.

POWER WHEELS MUST BE a car, truck or jeep type. No ATVs, gators, tractors, motorcycles, 4-wheelers allowed.

Only one Power Wheel battery (6-12 volt) allowed. No lawn mower, drill, or automotive batteries allowed. Battery must be secured and covered in vehicle.

Stock Power Wheel tires allowed, no added traction.

No raising or lowering of front or rear of Power Wheels allowed.

No special bumpers. Fake headers are allowed.

The hood, trunk, doors, and tailgate should be secured down. No additional reinforcement allowed. bumpers.

A helmet is REQUIRED (bike helmet okay) for driver/passenger. Shoes must be worn.

A passenger (3-10) is allowed with driver in power wheels. (helmet required)

No special bumpers. Fake headers are allowed.

Seat belt recommended but not required. You will be hitting each other in forward and reverse.

It is a TIMED event, and all drivers will receive a trophy on the track after the event.

LAWN MOWER DEMO DERBY RULES:

Lawn Mower Derby will take place after the last Combine Heat before the Combine Feature. Twenty minute time limit down to last mower or most aggressive hitter by judges decision when time expires.

1st Place - $300 & Trophy; 2nd Place - $200 & Trophy; 3rd Place - $100, 4th Place - $25. Best Decorated Mower - $50 & Trophy.

$25 registration fee for driver and 1 pitman. No extra pit passes sold. Grandstand tickets reserved seating $12.00.

All drivers must be 15 years or older (15-17 years of age must have a signed waiver from parents or guardians to participate).

All drivers and pitmen must sign a waiver upon entering the pit area, holding NO ONE responsible but yourself for anything that happens. PARTICIPATE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Drivers must wear long sleeve shirt, pants, and shoes. A HELMET IS REQUIRED. Neck brace and seat belt recommended.

No alcohol permitted in pit before, during or after derby. You will be disqualified and forfeit any payouts.

Inappropriate language & gestures will not be tolerated, you will be disqualified.

Trophies will be presented on the track. Payouts must be picked up by announcers stand after combine feature.

You must hit with front of mower during the derby. Hits are to be made to front and tires of other mowers only. Any intentional hit to rear of mower could result in being disqualified.

No sandbagging or team driving allowed. You will be warned once then disqualified. Judges decision final.

Front mounted engines only are allowed on mowers, no rear mount, or zero turn mowers.

Engine must be factory gas mower engine no large than 25 hp., and must be belt driven.

Mowers must be electric start. No pull starts allowed.

All plastic, glass and mower deck must be removed. Use any seat that will fit on top of the mower.

Must have brakes and forward and reverse gears at start of derby. Spark plug and carburetor protectors are allowed.

May have hand made exhaust header but must point up or down. Factory mufflers allowed.

If gas tank or battery is in front of engine you must move it to a safe place. Battery and gas tank must be secured and covered. Gas cover and tank must not leak or you will not run.

Leg guards are mandatory and must be bolted or welded from rear fender to front of foot rest or frame. May not be attached to front bumper. Must not protect tires in any way.

Any mower with unsafe leg guard or any guard that falls off during event will not be allowed to continue.

Shifter guard is recommended to protect your hand/arm if shifter is mounted on fender. Hand throttle is allowed.

No grill guards on the front of mower. No kickers or braces from front bumper to leg guards.

Hood must stay stock and intact with the exception of replacing plastic/fiberglass hoods with sheet metal. Must stay same/style as the original. Hoods may be bolted, wired or chained down.

Engine bay area may be reinforced but must be contained inside the hood and maintain factory body lines.

Modification of drive pulleys is allowed but must stay belt driven.

Trans axles remain factory but reinforcing or welding of spider gears is permitted.

Frames must be stock. Frames may have repair welds. Frames may have added metal to attach bumpers.

Front and rear bumpers are allowed. Bumpers CANNOT extend beyond inside of tires! Bottom of front and rear bumpers must be at AXLE height! Bumpers can be NO LARGER than 3” x 3” and not extend out more than 4” from frame to front of bumper. No spikes, sharp edges, or V bumpers allowed. If you want to run they will have to be cut off. Official’s decision final.

A roll bar is allowed. This is to protect the back of the seat. This bar may be mounted to leg protection structure or rear bumper but must not protect the rear wheels in any way!

Tires must be turf/lawn mower tires. No dually or bar tread tires. Tires may be tubed. No fluid, foam or solid tires allowed - you will be disqualified. Valve stem protection allowed.

FOR YOUR SAFETY – If your mower rolls over, you may be eliminated; all drivers must stop and wait for officials to restart derby.

All mowers must have a NUMBER clearly displayed on hood and both sides of mower.

Any mower or driver that is unsafe will be disqualified. All drivers must remain on mower during competition, unless directed by derby official.

Must be on grounds and in pit by 5:00 p.m. to be inspected. Pit opens at 2:00 p.m.

CHAIRMAN RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHANGE RULES, AND KEEP EVENT FAIR AND SAFE. OFFICIAL’S DECISIONS ARE FINAL.
